Mood was nervously excited this morning as Staveley set off for Wirksworth keen to continue our current winning form.
Weather was a typically drizzly Saturday which was an improvement on the previous week’s blistering sun.
Staveley fielded a strong side and 3 subs which worked to our advantage as Staveley got off to a flying start with a goal in the first 10. Excellent passing and movement pressured the keeper and Niamh knocked the ball into the right corner.
A second goal soon followed, with Emma S taking a brilliant strike as well as a stick to the head!
A few minutes later Staveley were at it again with another great finish from Kara.
Just before half time another great strike from Niamh caused Staveley to go in at half time with a very strong 4-0 lead.
After half time, Matlock made valiant attempts to push past Staveley but were brilliantly repelled by the Staveley defence, with some fantastic tackles from Beth and Fran and some beautiful interceptions from Andrea and Kerry , we stayed on the attack.
Staveley stepped up a gear with Grace and Andrea pushing up from defence to help Staveley get more goals. The next goal came from a short corner with a brilliant turn from Emma for her second goal of the match.
After that Staveley were pushing for good goal difference in the table and more goals came from Kara gaining her second and Emma getting her hat-rick with a great goal!
A terrific performance from all the team and especially Emma gaining man of the match for her spectacular performance and goals! A great win over long time rivals Matlock!
Other news from today’s game:
Gina’s attempt to ‘flick the ball like a hot potato’ resulted in the splits; impressive. Neither Frans were at all sweaty after the match.
Kerry got a nose-bleed on reaching the dizzy heights of the attacking half. Big thanks to Callum for umpiring and for cleaning up after us at the pub.
Final score Matlock 0 – Staveley 7
Niamh – 2
Emma Schaaning – 3
Kara – 2
