Staveley 1s v Derby 3s Saturday 11 November 2017

Looking forward to another positive performance with Hoppy in net, Holly, Izzy, Heather in defence; midfield of Andrea, Ruth, Ella and Kelly. Linz, Caitlin and Grace up top, Sarah C subbing up after already playing for the 2s earlier in the day.

Great start with Linz allowed to run as free as a bird teeing up Ruth who slid in Caitlin 1-0 and it was obviously gonna be a long evening for the Derby ladies.

So it proved with constant pressure Linz hitting a post, Ruth, Caitlin also unlucky before a super 1-2 between Andrea & Linz and a calm finish from Linz, 2-0 and then cracking solo efforts from Andrea & Ruth made it 4-0 before Linz added a second from Ruth’s assist to make it 5 at half time. Cruising and all about having the discipline to do the right thing now; Kelly took a nasty whack on the hand (like every week 😳) and then Ella took one in the face – ouch – straight back on once we knew no blood or missing teeth 🙄

2 more goals second half; both scored by Linz from great work by Andrea & Grace and then from Ruth and the game passed without any further injury to finish 7-0.

Chuffin dark, chuffin cold and another chuffin victory well done ladies only ever 1 winner and job done ✅ tougher test next week with Buxton 1s

Staveley 1s v Burton 3s Saturday 4th Nov 2017

Staveley welcomed an experienced Burton team to St Mary’s expecting a tough, physical encounter and with skipper Loz sidelined by the Beckham metatarsal 🤕.

Straight into it with our girls on the front foot and forcing a fistful of short corners from which no surprises with Ruth feeding Linz for the first goal of the game quickly followed by Ruth skilfully slotting in the 2nd. Only danger was to be too comfortable and so it proved with Burton finally exerting some pressure and pulling a goal back from a short corner from their first real attack after 15 mins 🙄

Burton kept on the front foot and the end to end Hockey continued for the rest of the half with Staveley less fluent than usual but still powerful in attack with Linz twice feeding Ruth to make it 4-1 at HT and a super hat trick from Ruth.

Second half and the girls turned up the heat driving forward and pinning Burton back in their own half – Hoppy a spectator, Izzy, Holly & Heather mopping up any rare breaks from Burton. Goals flowed with Linz running the show setting up Andrea for no. 5 (and a hat trick of assists for Linz) before Ruth was unlucky not to score but Grace pounced on the rebound; 6-1 and cruising 😎

Linz carried on the scoring herself with a super solo effort before teeing up Anna for another (8-1) and then smashing in Linz’s hat trick goal for 9-1

Some super silky hockey now with Ella & Graces energy & running continually opening up the game and rounded off with goal 10 again from Andrea again assisted by Linz …. super show after a cagey start but quality came through in bundles in the 2nd half; well played ladies 👏🏻🏑🥅

Staveley 1s v Derby 2s 28 October 2017

Another wet and windy one at the home of Hockey 🏑 on Saturday as we welcomed an experienced Derby team to St Mary’s.

Real end to end game of hockey in difficult conditions coming from a goal down to end with a hard fought 3-2 win with goals from Ruth, Andrea and Linz (assists from Linz & Ruth)

The young guns all came through with energetic performances from Izzy, Holly, Grace & Ella whilst Anna, Ruth, Andrea, Kelly and Linz steadied and steered the ship. Loz spent the 2nd half in goal with a stress fracture on her foot 😳 releasing Hoppy for a super cameo in Centre defence. Sheer bloody mindedness and determination won the day so well done girls for digging deep and finding a way 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 and onto the next one we go! Home again this Saturday 10am push back v Burton 3s all supporters welcome 😊

Staveley 1s v Matlock 2s – 21st October 2017

Staveley were looking forward to return to action following last weeks tough trip to Repton but we were faced with further high performing opposition in Matlock 2s riding high in 2nd place in the league. Conditions were also tough; blustery winds and intermittent showers but that’s enough about the weather; come on girls let’s ‘ave it!!

Strong start and 2 short corners in the first few minutes for Staveley testing the Matlock defence from the off, great 1-2 between Linz & Ruth then freed Loz who went to play in Shaz for a tap in only for the Matlock keeper to save expertly.

Matlock began to get into the game and were showing pace on the break with Nuella returning to face her former club mates for the first time but Holly was meeting the threat head on and defending expertly.

Breakthrough, Ella was set free down the right and persevered with her cross to set up Ruth for the opening goal with a calm finish.

Buoyed from taking the lead Staveley gained the upper hand; first Daisy freeing Shaz forcing another save and both Ruth & Linz going close from successive short corners; this was followed by Loz and the keeper again doing her job. Meanwhile in defence Anna was calm & assured with Holly and Izzy denying every Matlock threat and when they did manage a shot on target Hoppy stood strong. Now Staveley countered Loz with a lung busting run and the ball flying across the D without a final touch before Matlock launched more counters with the Kelly & Holly double act unbeatable. H-T 1-0 and a great game so far Staveley edging on clear cut chances.

10 mins into 2nd half and Matlock were exerting all the pressure; only last gasp defending from Izzy stopping a certain equaliser.

Staveleys turn to threaten on the counter with Daisy feeding Linz who forced a good save and with Ruth & Andrea digging in strong in midfield again feeding Linz for another save from Matlocks outstanding keeper. Loz broke through and this time Linz made no mistake with a great finish to the far corner, 2-0 Staveley

The girls won the ball back quickly and great work from a pumped Linz fed Daisy who forced another save before Matlock again asserted themselves Hoppy making a double save to deny and then another from a short corner

As the weather worsened the pressure was eased as Staveley worked the ball into the Matlock D and Linz slammed an unstoppable shot through the crowded D into the top corner for 3-0.

For the first time Matlock looked beaten but they refused to lie down & despite Hoppys best efforts slotted a consolation at the near post. Lifted by this 5 mins of pressure followed before Andrea, Ruth & Shaz again dig deep in midfield and Anna exerted calming influence at the back. Final score 3-1 great game, 2 good teams playing in great spirit and Staveley now replacing Matlock in 2nd place in the table – well done girls and final mention for Andrea playing through with a broken finger from last weeks bruising encounter.

MOM from Staveley was Holly and on behalf of Matlock, Izzy; both well deserved as a reflection on the defensive strength but don’t forget the quality going forward.

Goal scorers: Linz (2), Ruth (1)

Thanks again to Darren Kenney for the awesome report as always!

Staveley 1s v Matlock 3s – 7th October 2017

So, after the joint 30th birthday celebration of Loz & Linz on Friday night (happy bday again girls!🎂) the questions on the lips of the Staveley Massive were:
1) would everyone turn up after being out?
2) if everyone did turn up after being out; who could play?
3) why did Andrea start the buffet before everyone with a pizza 🍕 to herself?

Happily the squad did make it including a return for Shaz & Anna – though the prematch banter was a little bit muted compared to previous weeks, funny that 🤔

Game started openly with neither team exerting control until Matlock won a short corner and from a freak deflection saw the ball fly beyond Hoppy into the top corner 1-0 to Matlock after 5 mins.

This prodded Staveley into a little life and slooooowwwwly they began to gain control with Linz, Ella & Loz combining in a great move with Loz’s first time strike just wide.
The next 25 mins became more & more frustrating as Andrea, Loz, and Ruth all went close with the experienced Matlock keeper standing strong and only 1 break from Matlock giving Hoppy something to do.

More pressure Linz & Shaz both denied, all 1 way traffic in Staveleys favour and surely only a matter of time before the Massive were celebrating an equaliser; provided the Matlock keeper could be beaten ☺️

Last couple of mins before H-T and a driving run from Loz forced another great save from the Matlock GK before Kelly took a whack on her knee (might come to regret that!)
Pressure resulted in a short corner and finally the goal came; Linz set up Shaz for a goal on her return with a neat finish at the Far post. H-T 1-1 and relief for Staveley that surely this wasn’t going to be one of those days.

2nd half and a slow start gave hope to Matlock on the break but from then on Staveley began to turn the heat up; Linz just wide with an individual effort before a super run from Loz set up the increasingly influential Andrea to make it 2-1 to Staveley.
Matlock again pressed forward, a great run from their 8 from halfway to the goal line was finally halted and as Staveley returned the pressure Loz drove at the Matlock defence to assist Anna with the 3rd goal ( also on her return 👏🏻).

The game was beginning to open up now and Staveleys pace & power in midfield & upfront was showing while Heather, Izzy & Holly now had control at the back.
Holly picked up the ball on the half way and supplied Linz. With Linz’s head finally cleared she drove at the defence for the 4th; a quality goal from a quality player!
Great interplay from Andrea to Linz who tried to take the keepers head off 😳 shooting over the bar. Then Linz returned the favour to Andrea who cooly slotted her 2nd & Staveleys 5th.

Cruising now, more intricate play in and around the D and Andrea hurled herself on the deck to set up Linz for her second; 6-1 go on girls 👏🏻 Last few minutes and Loz claimed a deserved goal assisted by Linz to end the scoring on 7-1; comfortable victory on paper but hard earned and credit to the girls for digging deep after a fuzzy start and coming through with the defence in command; Ruth, Ella, Karena & Kelly plus returning Anna & Shaz tireless in midfield with Loz, Linz & Andrea doing most of the damage up top.
The game ended with Kelly gaining revenge for her whack on knee by taking out her opposite number with a shoulder barge straight out of Pretoria and what could have been a banana skin was avoided; 7-1 to Staveley and all’s well that ends well with sausage, beans & chips at the Red Lion Wirksworth, 15 more pints just to top up and more birthday cake 🍰

Repton away next week, toughest test yet but let’s ‘ave it!

Staveley 1s v Belper 4s – 23rd September 2017

1st team travelled to Belper hoping to maintain the 100% win record and keep the pressure on the top of the league. Another strong start with Staveley on the attack winning a short corner within a minute; and the first 10 minutes all in the opposition half probing for the opening goal.

Most impressive for Belper was their goal keeper who made 4 great diving saves before the breakthrough came with the 1st. from Andrea assisted by Ruth after constant pressure.

Rare break from Belper saw Heather stood strong in defence & Hoppy cleared comfortably. Belper’s keeper made 5-6 more super saves with Ella hitting the bar, Ruth & Linz all going close. 20 mins gone and unbelievably still only 1-0.

3rd penalty corner of the game to Staveley; another diving save from the keeper then cleared off the line followed by another penalty corner cleared more comfortably. Pressure finally told however with Sarah calmly slotting the 2nd with an assist from Linz. Quickly followed by a 3rd from Ruth again assisted by Linz. Another diving save from Belpers player of match and at HT 3-0 Staveley with only Belpers keeper making it respectable.

2nd half Staveley continued in same vein, Ruth scoring the 4th goal with another assist from Linz (from a penalty corner). Belper finally mounted 2 counter attacks with Izzy, Heather & Holly finally called into meaningful action. But Staveley continued to show more threat and goal 5 came from Linz with an assist from Loz. Quickly followed by Goal 6 from Andrea assisted by Loz neatly worked around the keeper!

Linz continued to be wasteful in attack (twice) and then did a swear.. potty mouth 🙄

Goal 7 came from Andrea assisted by Linz now she’d stopped swearing at herself; followed by goal 8, a second for Sarah assisted by Andrea. Last but no means least goal 9 from Loz with a reverse stick to the top corner, goal of the game assisted by Kelly and a great way to round off another dominant performance.

FT 9-0 to Staveley, tougher tests to come this season but great to watch free flowing hockey and confidence blossoms week on week; well done girls 👍🏼🏑🥅

Staveley 1st v Phoenix – 16th September 2017

The first XI welcomed Phoenix to St Mary’s for our 2nd game of the season looking to build on our strong start with last weeks victory. Start was delayed by 45 minutes whilst Loz had Ella & Grace sort her hair out (really? 🙄) but finally we were underway and a strong start saw Staveley immediately applying pressure in the Phoenix half with
Vaughany testing both the keeper and the cross bar. A first penalty corner led to the breakthrough goal from Ruth with an assist from Lydia following good interplay on the edge of the D with Andrea. Phoenix were on the back foot and pacey counter attacking led to another penalty corner with the same result a goal from Andrea assisted by Vaughany. More good work on the break and Lydia forced another good save from the Phoenix keeper.

Vaughany added a third goal (finally 😐) with Andrea assisting and Grace quickly added a 4th with Loz assisting. One way traffic now and a great individual effort from Loz following a pass from Vaughany in her own half (definitely not an assist). Half time 5-0 and the game over as a contest (& Loz’s hair all ok 😋) Phoenix were tiring under constant pressure and the 2nd half continued in the same vein: Loz breaking through with another great individual goal.

Goal 7 Andrea (Loz assist)
Goal 8 Ella (Loz assist)
Goal 9 Vaughany (again from Loz!)
Goal 10 hat trick for Vaughany & Andrea assist.
Goal 11 from Kelly with Vaughany assisting following good midfield work from Loz & Ruth.
Goal 12 Grace with her 2nd and an assist by Ruth.
Goal 13 Andrea (hat trick goal) assisted by Vaughany.
Goal 14 Vaughany rounded off the scoring again assisted by Loz. A comfortable morning overall and continuing the winning run; tougher tests will come but still a great start well done girls! 👌👏🏻

Ella was voted as MOM by the team with Grace again voted for by Phoenix – well done girls and on we go to the next one, Belper away next weekend 👍🏼🏑🥅

Goal Scorers: Linz (4), Andrea (3), Grace (2), Loz (2), Ruth (1), Ella (1), Kelly (1)

Staveley 1st v Amber Valley Hornets – 9th September 2017

First game of the season and we were welcomed to Ripley with wind, rain and 10 degrees; that’ll be Autumn here then! ☔️.
But the new look Staveley side started brightly despite the conditions and were quickly on top penning AVH in their half and restricting the opposition to counter attacks, although they did continue to look dangerous on the break. Pressure counted however and Staveley took a deserved lead only for AVH to hit back quickly from a short corner. Again Staveley pressed forward regaining the lead and the see-saw continued with AVH breaking through midfield and levelling up at 2-2 with a good finish on the break. Staveley reacted with a tactical switch sitting Andrea in a defensive midfield role and this paid off by interrupting the flow of AVH counter attacks and keeping pressure in the AVH half. Great inter-play and quick passing saw Staveley deservedly add 2 more goals before the break with a number of other chances and Hoppy largely untroubled at the other end. Half time 4-2 to Staveley.

2nd half started open again and Hoppy called into action turning away chances for AVH but Staveleys team shape, pace and power going forward was beginning to tell adding goals 5, 6 & 7 and effectively sealing the win. To their credit AVH still pushed forward and nicked a third but by this stage Staveley were in command; Hoppy largely a spectator, Izzy, Holly & Yso dominating their attackers, Andrea, Loz, Vaughny, Ruth & Kelly dominating midfield with Ella and Grace’s energy & enthusiasm down the wings. The game was stretched wide open by now and super passing & movement saw Staveley go on to add 3 more clinically taken goals through Vaughny, Ruth & Grace (on her first XI debut!) to finish up comfortable 10-3 winners & with newly promoted AVH overwhelmed. AVH nominated Grace as MOM; well done you 👏🏻 and congratulations to all the team on a super start to the season!🏑😃
